The campaign for 2020 is in full swing, and health care continues to be the top issue for Democratic primary voters. Health care spending reached $3.6 trillion in 2018. We have seen recent increases in the rate of uninsured individuals in the U.S., countering some of the gains of the Affordable Care Act since 2010. Also, access and health equity are significant and persistent issues in the U.S. health care system—for example: Black, American Indian, and Alaska Native women are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women (CDC).
Is Medicare For All the solution to these problems? Is M4A economically feasible? What other policies could improve quality, increase equity, and lower costs?
Join Heinz College Professors Martin Gaynor and Amelia Haviland and University of Minnesota Professor Jean Abraham (HNZ 2001) as they discuss the state of health care in America and how it became the #1 issue for 2020.
This talk is part of the Heinz College Health Care Speaker Series and is co-sponsored by the Heinz Health Care Club and Heinz Politics and Policy Club.
