BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Chelsea N. Jones is a Voting Rights Researcher at the Brennan Center for Justice, specializing in the intersection of race, systemic racism, and public policy. Her work is driven by a commitment to advancing racial equity, particularly in policies that diminish the electoral influence of marginalized communities. At the Brennan Center, she conducts research highlighting the disparate impacts of restrictive voter policies on these communities.
Before joining the Brennan Center, Dr. Jones served as a Senior Policy Fellow at the UCLA Voting Rights Project, where she analyzed the racialized effects of election policy changes nationwide. She earned her doctorate in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a dissertation focused on the role of sociocultural institutions, such as the Black Church, in mobilizing Black voters against voter suppression. Her previous work includes utilizing political geography to study the effects of polling place closures on African Americans. Dr. Jones has also contributed her expertise to the National League of Cities, conducting equity analyses on local government policies nationwide, and has served as a Fellow for the U.S. House of Representatives and Texas' Health and Human Services Commission. Her research has been published in the Washington Post and by Routledge. She is a recognized American Political Science Association Fellow, a Mark Hoffenberg Fellow, and a Ronald E. McNair Scholar. But most important of all, she’s a southern girl, with a desire to increase the political power and social well-being of all marginalized
groups.
