Ephemerality is a state of transience. From the Greek root ephemeros, the word “ephemera” refers to forms whose existence is fleeting by nature. Like water stains after the rain and ticket stubs of concerts that we keep in shoeboxes, things that serve a distinct purpose for a brief period of time can leave behind traces of themselves or be recorded and preserved, blurring the line between the ephemeral and the eternal.

Featuring works by students from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Fine Arts, ephemera explores the duality of transience and permanence through a rich variety of techniques and themes. Ethereal textures in two- and three-dimensional forms subvert traditional representational types, while dynamic installations evoke a multisensory dialogue between artist and audience. By displaying a diversity of media and meaning, ephemera invites a re-examination of artistic practice and audience experience.
