Emily Brown from Fourth Economy will be on campus to talk about economic development at a national level as well as careers within economic development. Emily Brown is an economic development professional with over 10 years of experience. She started her career as an Americorps VISTA working at a Main Street program helping to develop downtowns. She has since held positions working with student entrepreneurs in Georgia, assisting with student housing projects in West Virginia, and as the Director of Applied Research at the International Economic Development Council in Washington D.C. Currently, she is working with Fourth Economy as the Director of Economic Strategy, helping communities to create implementable economic development plans. In her work, and her frequent blog and Linked-In posts, Emily offers a perspective that is data-driven and practical while utilizing innovative ideas and best practices. Additionally, Emily has been involved with many creative projects, including the Kickstarted Cards Against Urbanity, a cheeky card game to provide education about urban planning, and held the former title of Monthly Columnist in Smart Cities at the blog for D.C.-based incubator 1776. She was a 2015 recipient of DCI’s 40 Under 40 awards, and she is a board member of the Incremental Development Alliance. She lives in Pittsburgh, where she enjoys bocce, browsing Zillow, and exploring the city.
