In this panel, we will explore the tension between the rhetoric surrounding immigrants in the media and political spaces and the lived experiences of immigrants and refugees in the United States, specifically focusing on Pittsburgh's local refugee population. Panelists will examine the role of misinformation and media narratives in shaping public opinion about immigration, the legal challenges immigrants face, and how these narratives contrast with the realities of immigrant life.
Professor Dan Silverman will provide insights into the media's role in perpetuating misinformation, while immigration lawyer Adam Greenberg will address the legal complexities and barriers faced by immigrants. A representative from Immigrant Services and Connects (ISAC Pittsburgh) will share on-the-ground perspectives from Pittsburgh’s immigrant and refugee communities.
