Join Heinz alumnus E.G.P. Haran, Ph.D. for a talk about Polio eradication and his extensive work in this field. Dr. Haran will speak about strategies, achievements, lessons learnt and continuing challenges, particularly in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Dr. Haran will also highlight his work experiences over the years in India, Indonesia and Bangladesh.

E. G. P. Haran (Ph.D. 1977) has over 35 years of experience in public health including immunization, polio eradication, disease surveillance, reproductive and child health, family planning, nutrition and capacity building of NGOs. During the past 27 years his main focus was on strengthening routine immunization, disease surveillance and polio eradication.

His expertise includes strategic planning, project designing, technical support, social mobilization, advocacy, training, capacity building, monitoring and evaluation. Dr. Haran has worked long term for World Health Organization, Rotary International, USAID, and international technical support organizations such as John Snow Inc., Program for Appropriate Technology in Health and Population Council. He has also done several short term assignments for WHO, Rotary International, DFID, USAID, John Snow Inc., PATH and Management Sciences for Health.

He has designed/led/participated in several international reviews and evaluations of Expanded Program for Immunization, polio eradication and surveillance in many countries (Bangladesh, India, China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand). He has also designed and implemented program strategies and work plans towards strengthening routine immunization (Bangladesh, Indonesia and Timor Leste); and prepared several country-specific site visit/appraisal reports of Polio Plus projects for funding.

Since 1998 he has been a member of the India National Certification Committee on Polio Eradication. He has written many articles and has lived and worked long term in India, Indonesia, Bangladesh and US and traveled extensively in Asia and some parts of Africa.
