Please join us for a lecture titled “Creating collective benefit and opportunity for the under-resourced in the development of emerging technologies” by Mike Skirpan hosted by the Smart Cities Club on 4/2 at noon in room 1002.

Mike Skirpan is an ethicist, writer, artist, educator, and concerned citizen based out of Pittsburgh, PA. Currently, he serves as the executive director at Community Forge and as a special faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University. He will be sharing about his experience balancing his faculty appointment where he does research, and community development role where he works to support Wilkinsburg. He will share examples of how technology is impacting communities through research and government interventions, and evaluate the opportunities and pitfalls. He will further share recommendations for us as we continue our careers!

More about Mike:
He received his PhD from CU-Boulder's Department of Computer Science in Fall 2017. His thesis focused on the use of socio-technical narrative as a way of communicating, comprehending, teaching, and debating the ethics of new and near-future technologies. His research spans topics such as design fiction, technology ethics, classroom design, engineering ethics pedagogy, futures, and risk. As special faculty in Carnegie Mellon's Department of Philosophy, he focuses on designing curricula and initiatives to teach ethics in technical courses.

He is the executive director at Community Forge, a mission-driven organization dedicated to rehabbing the Johnston Elementary School in Wilkinsburg, PA into a community hub focused on education, arts, civics, and local business development. His technical work is done through a social enterprise, Probable Models, that focuses on supporting and exploring ethical technologies. Please visit his website for more on his current projects and writings.

We hope you will join us for a non-pizza lunch!
